Nuclear and radioactive terrorism is one of the most challenging threats to international security. Currently, international nuclear security system mainly confirms to the IAEA rules, which demands to strictly inspect persons and their luggage entering nuclear facilities. However, the vehicles are simply checked by radiation detection gantry and chassis scanning. These checking methods can’t find the well-shielded nuclear material or the hidden explosives or other dangerous items, which is a great potential danger to nuclear security system. A new-type vehicle inspection system is developed under the support of China Nuclear Energy Development Project. Adopting the dual-projection digital radiography technology with a moving gantry structure, the system can get both sideview and upward-view images simultaneously, which makes it easier to find hidden objects and recognize the well-shielded prohibited items such as explosives and nuclear materials. The system is of great significance to prevent nuclear materials theft and nuclear terrorism.
