Public acceptance of nuclear power is a crucial factor for the energy policy. Most social surveys on nuclear energy have been statistical, and few have focused on the subjective mechanisms of attitude formation. The present study aims to identify and organize the topics that are the basis for individual attitudes toward nuclear power. The specific point is that recognition of facts and their confidence concerning nuclear energy have been asked and the results visualized the mental model of each individual.
The method of the structured interview has been adopted. First, respondents scaled their degree of agreement and confidence about 36 given statements related to the use of nuclear power. Second, respondents organized visually the relationship between their arguments about nuclear energy and these statements. The result shows what statement is supportive and negative to one’s attitude and why they agree or disagree with a statement.
This study revealed differences in the recognition of facts and values that led to the different attitudes toward nuclear power and indicated the crucial point of social discussion. The authors believe that the present study shows the possibility to elaborate the quality of social discussion by setting a way to enhance mutual understanding of people with different attitudes.
