We measured and calculated shock responses induced by stick-slip phenomenon in hard disk drives,and investigated the propagation path.At first,we measured the shock responses using piezoelectric elements and found that the shock propagates as an elastic wave in the top cover at the two velocities of longitudinal and distortional waves.Meanwhile,we calculated the shock responses using the finite element method,and confirmed consistency between the measured and calculated results.Using the simulation results,we investigated the shock responses of the whole HDD structure.As a result,we found that a dominant factor which leads a position error is the elastic wave that propagates from the stick-slip point through the actuator to the head.Also,we found that the elastic wave induces a tilting motion of the actuator.
