The purpose of this experimental research is to relate the friction coefficient and the longitudinal stiffness of poly-v belts with their efficiency.
The first part is concerned with the determination of the belt characteristics: longitudinal stiffness and damping, belt-pulley friction coefficient. Six different belts are considered, they differ on their longitudinal stiffness and/or the rubber ribs coating material. The friction coefficient is determined under the conditions of full sliding on a steel pulley for several contact arcs between the belt and the pulley and for several initial setting tension. The influences of these parameters are presented and analyzed.
The second part is concerned with the measurements of the efficiency on a two pulleys transmission for several operating conditions in terms of setting tension, transmitted torque and rotation speed. The torque and rotation speed were measured for the driven and driver axes. The belt speed was measured with a laser probe. The belt-pulley slip was determined for both pulleys; the speed and torque losses are presented. The global efficiency was also measured. A comparative analysis was done between the six belts considered in this study. The influence of the belt characteristics on the transmission efficiency is highlighted.
