Volvo's new high efficient 3-cylinder engine family called GEP3 has been developed to meet challenging fuel consumption requests, NVH on pair with engines with more cylinders, increased emissions standards as well as the high demands of Volvo customers.
To help fulfilling the requirements the choice of timing drive fell upon a highly sophisticated dry timing belt system.
The GEP3 timing drive system is equipped with a high strength high stiffness belt and a hollow shaft automatic tensioner and an idler. Angular tolerances are kept tight resulting in a belt system insensitive to belt tracking. The ball bearings of the tensioner and idler are purpose made and combines high durability, low friction and high angularity. The tensioner and the belt, only 17 mm wide, are chosen and tuned for as low pre-tension as possible to minimize noise and friction. To minimize the belt installation tension further the tensioner pointer is installed in a position that takes the initial belt elongation into account.
This is done to optimize power and torque output and at the same time lower emissions.
