The whole depth of the teeth of small pitch (module 1.25), carbon steel spur and helical gears hardened to Rockwell hardness (H_<RC>) 51 or 60 are cut at one time successfully by carbide hob. The hob can be used by taking measures systematically against damages such as macro or micro chipping, crater or flank wear or flaking of coated film. Climb hobbing without coolant using small diameter hob with roundly honed cutting edge is essential to put it to practical use. And the hob having cutting gashes more than standard hob is desired even though the risk of micro chipping is increased. Moreover, it is important to select a hob made of anti fatigue material and coated by PVD method. Tests revealed that the cutting speed of 70 m/min for H_<RC>51 or it of 45 m/min for H_<RC>60 is optimum.
