Abstract
Rust layer formed on weathering low-alloy steel which contains specific alloying elements, so-called "protective rust layer", is responsible for protection of the steel from atomospheric corrosion. It is important to know the structure and property of rust layer, so that we can preserve the structural steel for long period in atomospheric environment. In this paper, we tried to confirm a quantitative analiysis of rust constituents using X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. By using this quantitative method, rust layers formed on steels exposed in atmospheric environments were examined. The structure and protective ability of the rust layers were discussed.
