Abstract
The Great Hanshin-Awaji earthquake has brought a large number of failure of structure which are considerably different from those in the past earthquake. 0ne of them is the brittle fracture of steel box column of a high building. It is considered that the fracture was caused by the intensive ground motion in the initial part of the earthquake. In this paper, the three dimensional dynamic behavior of a high building was analyzed when the wave of Hanshin-Awaji earthquake actually recorded was inputted. The obtained numerical results show that a sufficient high stress to lead to the fracture occurs in a part of the high building at transient state.
