This study describes a method to evaluate the 3-D shape of the internal defect with infrared thermography. The temperature distributions of the surface of the test piece with an internal defect are measured by infrared thermography, while partly heating and stop heating from its back. From the experiments, the characteristic points derived from the 3-D shape of the defect were extracted by analyzing the temperature distributions from heating start to measuring finish. So by analyzing the time fluctuation of characteristic points, it was shown that the shape (i.e. width, depth, and thickness) of the defect was quantitatively able to evaluate.
