Major changes have taken place in our lives since the end of 20th Century. Among of the changes, the energy-related and environmental issues become major problems for the future. To resolve the energy-related and environmental issues, the battery has played a major role. In particular, the secondary battery has evolved corresponding to the changes in the social and economic environment. This paper summarizes the process and status of evolution about nickel-cadmium batteries, nickel-metal hydride batteries and lithium ion batteries to the present. Some of the technical features that demonstrate the evolution of each battery and the innovative batteries are described.
