The Great Eastern, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (IKB), was launched in 1858. She was 692ft long and weighted 27380 tons. The paddles were 52ft in diameter and the propeller was 24ft in diameter. She was used as a passenger ship on the Australia and Far East route. However, this route was not a financial success and by 1864 she was in dock. Then she laid the successful Atlantic cable of 1866. In 1972 the Great Eastern was docked in Liverpool. She rusted away until she was scrapped in 1888. The Great Eastern was the world's largest steamship until 1899. IKB died of stress and over-work in 1859.
