We have developed the magnetically suspended axial-flow pump with five-DOF control for artificial heart by using magnetic suspension technology. The magnetic suspension system for this pump consists of two magnetic bearings, a motor and a rotor. The magnetic bearings are set at each side of the rotor and the axial and radial position and the tilt of the rotor are controlled with the magnetic bearings. The motor is set between both magnetic bearings. The maximum oscillation amplitude of the levitated rotor in the axial direction was 0.04[mm] and that in the radial direction was 0.07[mm] during pumping. The maximum rotation speed, the maximum flow rate and the maximum pump head were 10,000[rpm], 1.27[L/min] and 47.5[mmHg], respectively. The developed magnetic suspension system displayed sufficiently magnetic suspension performance for artificial heart.
