Though solid modelers are popularized in recent CAD systems, 2D CAD systems are often used for designing products without complex curved faces. However, solid models are required for the products as manuals, catalogs, and so on. Therefore, it is necessary to convert 2D drawings to solid models. In present CAD systems, this conversion is usually carried out manually, which can be troublesome when the 2D drawings become complex. Though several systems are produced that automatically convert orthographic views to solid models, these systems deal with not assemblies but a single object. However, products are often designed as assembly drawings in 2D CAD systems. When previously proposed conversion systems are applied to 2D assembly drawings, many solutions could be generated in proportion to the complexity of the drawings. In this paper, a method is proposed that automatically converts 2D assembly drawings to 3D models. The method can generate a few solutions regardless of the complexity of the 2D assembly drawings. Standardized parts are often used in designing mechanical products. Especially structures consist almost of bars and plates. This method uses the dimensions and parts lists of the structures to obtain a few solutions.
