The demand of more accurate and durable edge shape has increased for high performance cutlery and medical operation tools. However, conventional surface modifications associated with high temperature, such as nitriding occasionally cause the sharp edge to deform. A spattering is effective to improve the durability of the edge shape but thick layer is necessary for high wear resistance, which causes larger radius of the edge. In this study, an applicability of low temperature plasma nitriding to the edge shape was experimentally investigated. It was clarified that the surface hardness increased even with low temperature processing less than 600K. Also, the cutting performance could be kept when the low temperature plasma nitriding is applied to razor blade.
