Water hydrostatic bearings can be a key component for ultra-precision machine tools. The water hydrostatic bearings are essentially the same as the oil hydrostatic bearings from a viewpoint of the bearing structure. However, Reynolds number of the lubricant flow of the water hydrostatic bearings is quite different from the oil hydrostatic bearing, because the viscosity of water is much lower than that of oil. Important factor determining the stiffness of the hydrostatic bearings is the pressure-flow characteristics of the restrictors used as the compensation devices. It is noted that the pressure-flow characteristics are affected by Reynolds number of the lubricant flow. Thus, the paper considers the pressure-flow characteristics of restrictors that are used in the water hydrostatic thrust bearings. Then the load capacity and bearing stiffness are studied via experiments and calculation.
