J-POWER has conducted R&D on coal gasification technology by constructing a pilot plant with a coal feed rate of 150 t/day in Wakamatsu Research Institute since 1995. The development of an oxygen-blown entrained-flow gasifier and the demonstration of cold gas cleanup technology were achieved. In addition, chemical CO_2 capture facility using MDEA solvent was installed in 2008. The facility has two different regeneration modes conventional steam regeneration and heated flash regeneration. In heated flash mode, solvent is regenerated by heating to several tens degree Celsius and reducing pressure. We found that chemical absorption with heated flash regeneration has a low energy penalty of less than 1.2 GJ/t-CO_2 compared to that of 2.5 GJ/t-CO_2 in chemical absorption with steam regeneration in the condition that CO_2 recovery rate is 80 - 85 %. Furthermore, we start pilot testing of physical CO_2 capture with Selexol process. The facility is now under commissioning.
