Abstract
Diesel spray formation that is a dominant phenomenological event for performance of diesel engine, has been received much attention for engine improvement. Vaporized fuel preparation in a combustion cavity is controlled by a breakup process of a high-speed fuel jet and diesel spray development. Auto-ignition of diesel spray is a physico-chemical process that contains spray evaporation, mixture formation and chemical reaction. Since this process is greatly affected by physical process of diesel spray formation, diesel spray combustion is also affected by diesel spray physical behavior. Then physical process of diesel spray formation is one of the major engineering issues of diesel combustion improvement. In this paper, physics behind diesel spray characteristics and its combustion is clarified.
