Ventilation in expressway tunnels is controlled so that visibility and air pollution in the tunnel are maintained within the set standards. Nippon Expressway Research Institute has been developing a MPVC (Model-based Predictive Ventilation Control) software using simulation models for the purpose of controlling ventilation appropriately and effectively. The MPVC software has already been employed in nine tunnels in Japan to maintain the portal environment and control minimum wind velocity. The software has shown that it is possible to achieve the control target and reduce operating costs, which were difficult with conventional ventilation systems. For this reason, we expect the MPVC software to be employed in more tunnels in the future. This paper gives an overview of the MPVC software and describes past installations and results.
