Recently, weight saving and friction reduction in engine parts becomes more important to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Therefore it has been the development of surface treatment technology and lubricants for improvement of tribological performances of the engine sliding parts. CrN coatings are used for automotive tribo-components from the view point of friction reduction as they have excellent tribological properties. However, lubricating oil additive for the CrN coatings is still not sufficient in the process of the research. The purpose of this study is to develop the lubricating oil additive for CrN coatings. Tribological properties of the CrN coatings are evaluated by using a block-on-ring type sliding tester under lubrication with ZnDTP, MoDTC, and anti-wear agents containing sulfur. As a result, the friction coefficient of MoDTC containing lubricant was lower than that of non-additive. And the friction coefficient of MoDTC and ZnDTP containing lubricant was lower than that of only MoDTC. It was suggested that the friction coefficient decreases because of the synergistic effects of MoDTC and ZnDTP.
