Tribological properties of textured surface fabricated with discontinuous micro cutting process were investigated. An aluminum cast alloy (AC8A) discs were used for the specimen. The texturing process was carried out with a CNC machining center using a novel geometry of the cutting edge. The resulting surface morphology consisted of micro dimples having a diameter of 250-280 μm and a depth of 5-10 μm, with controlled area fraction of 10 and 20 %. The testing surface was occasionally polished with diamond slurry to truncate. The tribological properties evaluated with three ball on disc type testing apparatus in a lubricated condition showed that the friction coefficient of the textured surface was low and stable from the beginning of the experiment. A dependence of friction coefficient on the dimple depth was also found. Optimization of dimple geometry is necessary to improve tribological properties.
