“Delightful” products that inspire a sense of delight are more attractive to people, compared with other products necessary for daily life. In addition to enriching the lives of individuals, such delightful products may also exert a positive effect on society. This presentation introduces an engineering method for developing delightful products. Specifically, a multi-scale topology optimization method is proposed for the design of an innovative heat control device that incorporates new benefits that previously did not exist. In this method, a micro-scale structural optimization targeting material designs and a macro-scale structural optimization targeting device designs are simultaneously performed via multi-scale analysis such as the homogenization method. A simple design example is provided to demonstrate the performance of our proposed method.
