To verify the accuracy of the current numerical method for predicting thermal environments in tunnels, annual change of daily mean air temperature in a ventilated tunnel is calculated by using an approximate solution obtained by Peavy. By the solution, the air temperature in the tunnel without heat sources in the tunnel and with periodically changing entering air temperature can be computed analytically. The air temperatures by numerical calculation were compared to theoretical values when the thermal conductivities of rock surrounding the tunnel were 0.5 and 5.0 (W/m K). Numerical results agree quite closely with the theoretical values in the fully damped region of the transient response of air temperatures in the tunnels.
