Impeller which is a part of the turbocharger is usually produced by machining with end mills. When machining with high efficiency, tool failure caused by high load is a serious problem. The objective of this study is to clarify the machining state of cutting with taper ball end mill using a machining center. Cutting force waveform and chip flow were measured using some taper ball end mills with different geometry. The relation with tool shape such as helix angle and cutting conditions were clarified. Using a taper ball end mill with a small helix angle and DLC coating and machining with up cut reduced the load on the tool. Furthermore, a cutting model to simulate the transition of the cutting force which is particular to impeller machining was developed. And it was compared with the experimental results. As a result, the cutting force value and cycle corresponded well with the experimental data. The simulation made it possible to calculate the cutting force waveform in the various machining paths and any cutting condition.
