WC/Co alloy has high hardness and is widely applied to cutting tools and die materials. The surface of the alloy is modified by laser peening to harden for longer lifetime of cutting tools. The modified surface hardness which depends on laser conditions is about 50 HV harder than that of non-modified surface. The effect is mainly caused by work hardening of Co. The modification process is finally applied to both rake and flank face of cutting tool and it is evaluated by outside diameter turning. Ware of modified tip is about half of that of conventional one.
