A traction drive is a device that transmits power to rolling elements with smooth surface under EHL condition. At present, traction drive is studied to adopted reduction gears of electric vehicles. In this case, rolling elements must be pressed high load each other in order to improve transfer capacity. However, if the pressing load is increased, the oil film thickness at the contact point will decrease so that a risk of direct contact is high. Therefore, the oil film thickness under high load was measured by visualizing the contact point using photochromism method. In photochromism the color density of solution changes depending on the oil film thickness. As a result, under the low load, the oil film thickness decreases with increase the pressing load as theory. In addition, under the high load, the oil film thickness increases with increase the pressing load as contrary to the theory, so we considered the reason.
