The present study describes surface damage subjected to cyclic rolling and sliding contact such as gear tooth. A testing apparatus possible to control slip ratio was developed. To apply the residual stress near the contact surface, a shot peening was carried out to the roller specimen. The residual stress on the surface of the friction surface was measured during the test was measured with an x-ray diffraction methodology. Results showed that the shot peening with fine beads was effective to degrade the surface damage including the wear and flaking. A fluctuation of the residual stress was larger in rolling contact condition. A relationship between surface damage and residual stress was discussed.
