Abstract

In order to determine the contribution of surface tension at stoma into the water uptake mechanism in plant, relationship between pore size and height of water column was measured by plug with micro unit pores attached capillary tube. Required result was matched theory based on fluid dynamics. Water height was inversely proportional to the diameter of the pore. It means that smaller stoma is advantageous for water supply at surface tension. Including the result, stomatal size and tree height of actual plant were measured and discussed how tree height affects the size of stoma. Their relation was negative but slope was smaller than that of physical model. That means actual trees supply the shortage of water height with other mechanisms. However, surface tension is considered to be useful for plants below 1.6m. This research showed that surface tension at stoma has ability of water uptake and possibility of inference on water supply gained by stomatal size.
