In gas atomization for producing a fine metal powder, a supersonic under-expanded jet issued from an annular nozzle is used generally. The jet from an annular nozzle flows while enclosing a negative pressure recirculating vortex region and a high temperature molten metal is inflowing there. The flow characteristics is very complex because they include an atomized flow with a high temperature metal droplets and phase change. However, there are a few studies on the flow characteristics of supersonic under-expanded gas jet. In this study, the flow characteristics with flow fluctuation are examined by a numerical and experimental analyses including velocity and pressure measurements. The experiments were carried out using a two-dimensional test model and the atomized molten metal flow was simulated by atomized water flow.
