In recent years, the elderly population is increasing due to the development of medical technology, and the number of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is increasing. Patients with ALS will have difficulty moving their limbs and speaking. However, human eye movements are not relatively attacked even when ALS progresses. Therefore, communication systems using an eye-tracking device have been developed. Most of them have a character-input screen, and the patients can input characters by looking at input areas arranged on the character input screen. This allows the patients to communicate his/her intentions. However, the character-input screens of these communication systems are not fully considered microsaccades and eye fatigue. In this study, we previously designed a character-input screen considering microsaccades and eye fatigue. In this paper, we introduce a communication system that can be operated only by eyes using the character-input screen developed based on the design. In addition, we present experimental results for verifying the effectiveness of this system.
