Two-dimensional (2D) drawings are conventionally used to represent information regarding mechanical products. Devices such as engines, pumps, transmissions, and manual winches are used in education to teach students design methods and how to understand such drawings. Although model-based definition, which uses three-dimensional (3D) models, is being introduced, conventional 2D drawings are still important. Students today have grown up with 3D representations of objects (e.g., in video games and online videos) and thus find it difficult to imagine the finished state of an object from 2D drawings and to represent their own creations using such drawings. Therefore, in this paper, we materialize the design problem of a spindle table (transmission) for a lathe. We simplified the gearbox structure so that it could be more easily understood by students. It was found that the embodied model of this drafting task can greatly improve students' understanding of a product.
