Abstract

The dissemination of small wind turbines (SWT) is so slow compared to PV panels. To play a role of the coming distributed energy society, further improvements of techniques and methods in SWTs are required. We have developed a new wind turbine system, called wind-lens turbine (WLT) that consists of a diffuser shroud with a broad-ring brim at the exit periphery, showing a power augmentation by a factor of about 2–5 compared with a bare wind turbine. A multi rotor system (MRS) using WLTs have also been developed. MRSs are composed of three, five, seven and more WLTs and show a further improvement in total power output. In recent years, our research concept on renewable energy is based on a keyword of “Small is profitable”, considering the social acceptability and environmental problems.
