Small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises face various issues in human resource development. Internships are effective this purpose, but the specific elements of an effective internship remain unclear. This paper reports on internships evaluated as effective in human resource development by managers. These internships were conducted in Tsubame City, a cluster of small and medium-sized manufacturing industries. Two internships were examined regarding activity content and employee changes. Interviews with management and supervising employees confirmed that the collaboration between employees and students enhanced the ability to propose improvements at the job site. To promote this, it was considered effective to include collaboration with other departments within the company and proactively incorporate unused technologies in the internship tasks.
