NGK has been developing sodium-sulfur battery for load leveling in cooperation with the Tokyo Electric Power Co. since 1984 and recently NGK has developed compact 50kW module for the purpose of cost reduction and improved energy density. A 6000kW battery system constructed from these 50kW modules has been operating since March, 1999,at Tokyo Electric Power Company/Ohito Substation. This paper presents the design of the vacuum thermal enclosure used for 50kW battery module, particularly the heat balance between generation and radiation.
