Abstract
Face gears are expected to be applied to a transmission for helicopters. The present paper describes a face gear design system which enables design engineers to evaluate a tooth shape including tooth form coordinates, locations of contact lines, total length of simultaneous contact lines. Furthermore, on the assumption that distributed loads are uniform on the simultaneous contact lines, tooth contact stress can be also calculated. In addition, using a commercial 3D CAE software, I-DEAS, tooth bending stress can be estimated. This design system will play an important role for the determination of face gear dimensions.
