A general approach is presented to the performance analysis and optimization of mechanical systems with network structures such as energy conversion and pump systems. A building block approach is adopted to create an analysis model, which is composed of component, substance, and system models. A performance analysis problem is formulated as a set of nonlinear algebraic or differential algebraic equations, and is solved by the Newton-Raphson or a combined Runge-Kutta and Newton-Raphson method, respectively. A performance optimization problem, which includes a performance analysis one, is formulated as a nonlinear programming problem, and is solved by the modal trimming method for global optimization. This approach is applied to the thermoeconomic analysis and optimization of a gas turbine cogeneration unit.
