The measurement method for bearing characteristics such as air film thickness, friction torque, spring and damping coefficients and pressure distribution of the thrust air film bearings are presented. The specially designed test rig is need to measure these bearing characteristics for a wide range of operation speed from 20,000rpm to 40,000rpm. Two types of bearings, pocketed and spiral grooved are used in the measurements. From the results, the accuracy and repeatability of the measurements are confirmed.
