Passive shock absorbers can be optimally designed for specific conditions of use. However, passive shock absorbers cannot function optimally under conditions that are different from the specified conditions of use. In order-to solve these problems, we propose an optimization method of a semi-active shock absorber for aircraft landing gear and show that the proposed shock absorber can handle the problem of variation of maximum vertical acceleration of aircraft during landing due to variation in the mass of the aircraft. We compare the optimum semi-active shock absorber and an optimum passive shock absorber regarding mass variation of the aircraft via simulation. Furthermore, we compare the optimization results using Powell's conjugate direction method and those using Carroll's FORTRAN Genetic Algorithm Driver.
