Abstract
Neutrophils retain in pulmonary capillaries causing 40- to 80-fold higher concentration than in systemic large vessels even in normal lungs. The highly concentrated neutrophils are effectively recruited to inflammations for the host defense. Tube-flow model and Sheet-flow model are well known in the investigation of blood flow in pulmonary capillaries. Cross-sectional configuration of Tube-flow model is circle, but that of Sheet-flow model is rectangular. In the previous research, flow of neutrophil in an axisymmetric capillary model was investigated. In this research, three-dimensional deformation of a neutrophil and flow of plasma in a rectangular model are simulated to investigate effects of the difference in cross-sectional configuration. The neutrophil is largely deformed in the direction of X- and Y-axes. There are clearances between corners of the channel and the cell during the cell is in the channel, and pressure acting on the cell decreases due to plasma leak through the clearances.
