In recent years, small hybrid rocket experiments are actively carried out by students in Japanese universities. In the experiments, rockets are usually retrieved by a mounted parachute. In the inflation process, however, the rocket structures experience considerable opening shock load, and in some cases, result in destruction of the primary structure. In this paper, we describe the opening shock load with the acceleration data acquired by sensor mounted on two hybrid rockets. We also discuss the design and the performance of the shock absorber system.
