A rotational/linear two degrees-of-freedom switched reluctance motor (2DOF-SRM) has been developed for the purpose of independent control of rotational and linear actuations on one actuator. The prototype 2DOF-SRM has 3 photo switches on the stator, detecting the rotor angular position for excitation of phase windings for rotational speed control. It also has an exterior linear position sensor at the outside of the motor to detect the rotor axial position for linear displacement control. The low resolution of rotor angular position detection and uncompactness of the motor due to addition of the exterior linear position sensor are the issue to be solved for practical use. For the issue, this research developed the built-in high-resolution angular and axial position sensor in which the rotor is used as the sensor target. This paper presents the sensing principle of the developed sensor and its performance.
