We developed a system of combining ultra-micro indentation testing and high resolution atomic force microscopy (AFM). The developed instrument is able to obtain high resolution AFM images by Si tip and conduct indentation tests by a diamond indenter without moving the specimen. The strength of quenched and tempered SCM415 steel was analyzed by the system. The penetration depth under the constant force was dependent on the existence of boundaries and cardides.
