The present study deals with the compressive strengths of low density woods (balsa, redwood, fir-plywood) at three levels of strain rate including impact range. For impact range of strain rate of the order of 10^2 (s^<-1>) we used the appratus of HPB type, where the strains of specimen were measured by two optical displacement transducers (Zimmer) and stresses were measured by the two point gage method based on the stress wave propagation. As a result, it was found that stress and deformation behaviour of woods depend remarkably on the loading direction, for example , the strength in the end face direction is higher than in any other directions. And also it was recognized that stress-strain relations depend on the density and strain rate. These data will be available when present materials are used as a shock-absober.
