This paper describes effects of composition and heat treatment on tribological properties of a series of Al-Si based films coated by a low pressure plasma spraying. Friction and wear properties of films were evaluated by employing a reciprocating sliding tester under a boundary lubricating condition. The hardness and wear resistance increase with silicon addition. The 40-wt% silicon provides the optimum tribological properties, and this composite shows an excellent wear resistance along with higher hardness and low coefficient of friction. Solution heat treatment followed by aging has shown excellent improvement in wear resistance of sprayed films.
