An experimental study was performed for the onset of natural-convection in a two layered fluid placed in a shallow cavity and heated from below. Two liquid layers were initially composed of the upper layer of water and the lower layer of sucrose aqueous solution. Whether or not motion of a fluid occurs was determined experimentally by the variation of Nusselt number with Rayleigh number. It is shown that the onset of natural convection in the case of the two layered fluid occurs at the same Rayleigh number as that found theoretically in the case of the single layer.
