Metal Matrix Composite (MMC) has been used for the Automotive, Aerospace, and Train industries due to its extremely lightweight and high strength properties. However reinforcement particles in MMC have a tendency to be very hard so tool wear occurs quickly due to abrasion of the cutting edge. Authors have attempted to modify the shape of diamond coated tools based on cutting MMC to avoid premature wear of cutting edges. A change to the diamond coating property was accomplished by decreasing the crystal size of the diamond coating. With this fine crystal diamond coating, it now becomes possible to obtain high durability while cutting MMC. Due to the combination of these modifications, a high performance could be realized compared to non-coated carbide tools.
