A new final-state control (FSC) method - based on a plant-shaping filter - for short-span seeking in a hard-disk drive has been developed. This new FSC method can directly determine the power spectrum of a feedforward control input by using the plant shaping filter. It was experimentally confirmed that the developed FSC method significantly reduces residual vibration. And, thus, seeking time can be reduced.
