Abstract
An SPA, which remarkably reduces the skew angle to 4.0°, was designed. Compared with the LAA, its moment of inertia was reduced by 33%, and the seek time was shortened by 13%. A prototype of the SPA was created and the FRFs were measured. The butterfly-mode frequency was observed at 5.5kHz, which agreed well with the FEM analysis results. The results confirmed that the SPA is a predominant solution for attaining a small skew angle in HDDs.
