Tribological failures such as a pitting or a shelling are often caused from a subsurface crack. So in this study, the stress intensity factors are analyzed for a multiple kinked subsurface crack in a half space due to repeated rolling/sliding contact with frictional heat. On the bases of these results, for the case of bearing steel(SUJ2), using the maximum energy release rate criterion and the modified Paris power crack growth law, the crack growth path and the fatigue life until the tribological failure are predicted under repeated rolling/sliding contact. And the effects of the depth of an initial horizontal crack and the frictional coefficient (involved in the thermal effects) on the results are considered.
