Hardness test around ductile - brittle temperatures is one of the promising ways to understand irradiation embrittlement of materials, because of its simplicity in test method and specimen requirement. The authors developed a low-temperature micro-Vickers hardness tester and carried out a series of Vickers hardness tests on a reactor pressure vessel steel, SQV2A under the temperature of -140 to 23 degrees Celsius. Vickers hardness in various temperatures has a good relationship with the yield stress of the material under the corresponding temperature condition. This result shows the possible potential of hardness test as an alternative method of tensile test even in the low temperature conditions.
