The crucial role of mechanical strain on the topology of polarization vortices and the switching behavior in ferroelectric PbTiO_3 nanodots are investigated using phase-field simulations. An applied uniaxial in-plane compression changes its topology from a single vortex to two arrayed vortices. The strained nanodots exhibit a distinctive response to applied electric fields with two hysteresis loops, while the unstrained nanodots show just a single loop.
